Listen Up Folks!

Last week we were lucky enough to have some Lynfield College students come and teach us about sound. We learnt about decibels and how loud is too loud for our ears!

To prove some of these ideas about sound, we created a model of an ear drum using a cup, balloon and a rubber band. We carefully sprinkled some salt on the stretched balloon. Then we made a variety of loud and soft noises. We had to carefully observe what was happening to the salt.

What do you think happened?  We even used the UE BOOM to play loud music to see what happened to our model ear drums.

  1. Hi Im Leah. I really like that idea of doing the drums I was wondering if it hurt your ears when you were playing the drums. It reminded me of when I was at my friends house and there was a drum kit it hurt my ears.

I really like the idea of testing the sound decibels and making the model ear drums. I think that the salt would have shaken and spread out depending on how loud the sounds were. Did you really enjoy doing the sound project and would you be able to teach someone else what you learnt?
    Yours Sincerely
    Sam.

  3. Bula I'm Sebastian and I'm from Grey Main School. I love how you made the ear drum but my favorite part was how you used recyclable materials. How do you hear out of your ear drum? I would like to know more about the ear drum. From Sebastian

  4. Ni Hau it's Alex Cl. Wow I didn't think that you could make a model ear drum and I reckon that the salt moved to the loud sound. It is great how you are using a model ear drum and not a real one but how do you know how loud you can have the sound?
Did the salt move to the sound?
